Dar to host youth summit on MDGs

Starting next week Dar es Salaam will host 300 youths from across all five East African Countries Rwanda, Burundi, Uganda, Kenya and Tanzania to discuss climate change issues and how they affect developing countries as well as consultations on Millennium Development Goals (MDGs).

The Eastern Africa Regional Model United Nations (EARMUN) coordinator general, Jacob Mogendi, told journalists in the City that the seven-day meeting which will start in October 6 to October 12, apart from the problems the summit will also discuss possible measures to meet the challenges.

Themed: ‘Energy and Climate Change post 2015-youth envisioning towards sustainable development’ the convention will be meaningful and fruitful to the regions’ youth.

“…because most of us are not aware of energy issues or climate change and its effects” Mogendi said.
This year’s conference has been sponsored by the government through the Foreign Affair and International Cooperation Ministry, the Norwegian Embassy and United Nations Information Centre.

“We urge all youth in East Africa as well as youth supporters to join us in this event partaking that is vital for the development of our countries and the future of younger generations,” she said.

United Nationals Association of Tanzania (YUNA) National chairperson, Lwidiko Edward, shed light on another aspect to be discussed saying the gathering will also give youth room to contribute their views on the post 2015 Agenda ‘The World We Want.’

“YUNA of Tanzania has been collaborating with that of Kenya and Uganda since 2006, together they have managed to organise similar conferences every year focusing on youth engagement in the MDGs,” Edward said.
Apart from the five East African countries, three other Eastern African countries are likely to participate these include Zambia, Ethiopia and South Sudan.
